Here you will find information about payroll, as well as some frequently asked questions.

What is the tutor payment amount?

Compensation: Tutor pay is $9 per thirty minute tutoring session. This applies to both tutors that have assigned student sessions and those who are substitute tutors.


How is pay calculated?

Tutor pay is calculated according to the number of sessions you work – either as a regularly scheduled tutor or as a substitute. The BookNook Tutor Portal is set up to automatically track completed sessions and provide tutors with a view that displays those completed sessions for which you will be paid.

For example:

  • If you are committed to teach four sessions in one week and show up for all four sessions, you will be paid for those four sessions. If you are committed to teach four sessions in one week and show up for three sessions, you will be paid for three sessions.
  • Any tutor may teach a substitute session. Substitute sessions are paid at the same rate of $9 just like other tutoring sessions. If you teach two substitute sessions, you will be paid for two sessions. If you sign up for four substitute sessions and only teach three of them, you will be paid for those three sessions.
  • Pay for substitute tutoring is only paid for the actual sessions taught.

How is pay issued?

Pay will be issued through our payroll system, WorkMarket. Please make sure your payroll details are set up through our system as a part of your onboarding at least 1 week prior to the start of a tutoring program, and allow for any additional processing time your bank requires. If your banking information is not in WorkMarket by the deadline, your pay will be delayed to the following pay period after you input your banking details. You are responsible for keeping your personal details in WorkMarket accurate, including address, email, and contact information, and you may update these directly through your WorkMarket if and when they change.

Please note - you must enter direct deposit information for a US bank account, PayPal, HyperWallet, or set up payments through the WorkMarket card. Our payroll system is not set up to deliver paper checks. A delay in entering and verifying your direct deposit information can result in a delay in your pay.

Where can I view my pay information?

Always check your WorkMarket account to see the most accurate Payroll information. Although there is a "Wallet" in the BookNook Tutor Portal, the most accurate information will always show in WorkMarket.

When do I get paid? 

Pay is issued twice a month. Payroll dates are the 7th (for tutoring from the 16th through the last day of the previous month) and the 22nd (for tutoring from the 1st through the 15th of the current month). If one of these dates falls on a weekend day, pay is issued the Friday before.
*Due to our payroll processes, pay information is visible in the Tutor Portal as well as WorkMarket before the actual payday. Information shown in the Tutor Portal will only reflect classes attended that can be calculated by the Portal and will not show any classes that need to be adjusted manually by the Payroll team. WorkMarket should always be the "source of truth" for payroll information, since it will include manual adjustments, training pay, or reimbursement pay owed. Although the pay will be visible when payroll is ran by our team, it will not be available or released until the scheduled payday (dates above). 
*Please ensure you have set up your WorkMarket account to auto-withdrawal daily to ensure you receive your payment on the date it is issued.

Are there opportunities for additional pay?

From time to time, BookNook may offer opportunities to participate in the development of our program through meetings, focus groups, feedback sessions, etc. These are invite only. These will be paid opportunities at the $18/hour rate.

How do I get reimbursed for background check expenses?

Instructions for each background check reimbursement are covered on the individual state pages. Hyperlinks to these pages can be found in the overview chart on the Background Check page. 

How are cancellations handled? 
If a program or a program day/days are canceled, BookNook will send communications via email. If for any reason schools are closed during a day of tutoring, sessions will be canceled.

  • Program day: If a tutoring program day is canceled and tutors are notified with more than 24 hours notice, scheduled appointments will be removed from the BookNook Tutor Portal and tutors will not be paid for their scheduled session(s). If a tutoring program date cancels with 24 hours notice or less, tutors will be paid for their scheduled session(s).

  • Full program: If a tutoring program is canceled and tutors are notified with more than 48 hours notice, scheduled appointments will be removed from the BookNook Tutor portal and tutors will not be paid for the program dates. If a tutoring program is canceled and tutors are notified with 24 hours notice or less, any session within the 24 hour window will be paid. Tutors in good standing who experience an early program cancellation will receive preference for future open programs that are a fitting replacement.

    • For example: If a tutoring session for 12pm Eastern/10am Pacific Time on Thursday 3/10 is canceled at 11am Eastern/8am Pacific on Wednesday 3/9, tutors will not be paid for the Thursday session.

    Please note: If your session is marked as “canceled” in the Tutor Portal, you do not have to attend that session, and you may pick up a substitute session during that time if you choose.

How do I update my address? 
If you have an address change, please be sure to update your address in WorkMarket.
