Michigan Background Check Instructions

A majority of our upcoming programs for the 23-24 school year will be with school districts in Michigan, so all newly qualified tutors will be directed to complete this background check process first. 

We have partnered with Detroit Public Schools Community District (DPSCD) to provide us with clearances for our tutors. DPSCD uses IdentoGO, a certified FBI Channeling Agent to provide background check processing and fingerprinting services to anyone working with their students.

 

IdentoGO offers two different options to complete the background check process. Option 1 is the recommended option as the processing time for background checks is faster, but Option 2 is a viable option if, for any reason, you cannot use Option 1.

  • Option 1: Complete the Digital Live Scan process. This option requires you to visit an IdentoGO location for in-person fingerprinting. IdentoGO has locations throughout the US, and we will help you identify the closest location as part of the process. Click here to jump to the instructions for the Digital Live Scan process.
  • Option 2: Complete a Hard Copy Mail-In process. This option takes 5+ weeks to process your background check, but it can be completed without visiting an IdentoGO location. This option is great for anyone who does not live close to an IdentoGO location or cannot attend an in-person fingerprinting appointment for any reason. If, at any point in this process, you need assistance, support is available from both BookNook and IdentoGO. There is also a Frequently Asked Questions section at the end of this page that covers some common questions. Please check this section before reaching out to BookNook or IdentoGO.

BookNook Support

  • BookNook hosts live Tutor Office Hours via Zoom twice a week (times below). During this time, you will be provided with individualized support. Links to join these sessions can be found on this page.

IdentoGO Support

  • If you have questions about the registration process, accessing your TCN, or other questions specific to IdentoGO’s fingerprinting services, please call IdentoGO at (866) 226-2952.

Option 1: Digital Live Scan Instructions

(Primary option, available to all tutors in the US who can attend an IdentoGO in-person fingerprinting appointment)

Step 1: Complete the online IdentoGO registration process

  • Go to the IdentoGO Michigan Website
    • Michigan Residents: Click on the green box that says: “Register for In-State Digital Fingerprinting Services (Live Scan)”.
    • Non-Michigan Residents: Click on the green box that says: “Register for Out-of-State Digital Fingerprinting Services (Live Scan)”. Please note: If you live outside of Michigan, you will need to pay an additional $39.95 IdentoGO location fee out-of-pocket at the time of your appointment, but BookNook will reimburse you for this fee (see Step 4).
  • Enter the agency/requester ID code “1119A“ and click “Go”.
  • Select “Michigan School Employment / NCPA” as the “fingerprint reason” from the dropdown menu on the next page. 
  • Enter your zip code to find an IdentoGO Live Scan location near you. Please note: BookNook does not reimburse for mileage to attend your Live Scan appointment. It is up to you to decide how far is a reasonable distance to drive.
    • If there is not an IdentoGO Live Scan location within a reasonable distance of your zip code, you will need to switch to Option 2 and submit a hard copy of your fingerprints via mail. Click this link to be taken to the Hard Copy Mail-In process instructions. Please note: Hard copy prints can take 5+ weeks to process, while prints completed through Live Scan at an IdentoGO location typically process in under 2 weeks.
  • Click “Schedule” when you find a convenient location near you.
  • Select your desired date and time. Please note: Your appointment must be scheduled within 30 days, or you may have to restart the entire process with a new coupon code.
  • Click “Continue”.
  • Fill out ALL of the requested personal information on the application page. It is important that you type your name EXACTLY how it appears on your government-issued ID. 
  • Verify all information is correct on the Information Verification page and click “Go”.
  • On the payment page, select the method of payment you will use when you attend your appointment (credit card or check/money order). BookNook will reimburse you for the cost of the fingerprinting. Reimbursement instructions can be found in Step 4 below.
  • On the Registration Complete page click “Save as PDF” to save a copy of your IdentoGO Registration Document to your computer (for future reference). You can then print out the document from the PDF to bring to your appointment.

Step 2: Complete the MI authorization documents via DocuSign

Complete the documents by clicking here. Please complete all requested information in the required fields. Upon completion, we will automatically receive a copy of the documents. This step must be completed BEFORE your LiveScan appointment, as you will need a copy of the form. 

Step 3: Attend your Digital Live Scan fingerprint appointment

  • Attend your appointment at the selected IdentoGO center on your scheduled day and time. Make sure to bring the following documentation to your appointment:
    • The IdentoGO Registration Document you printed out in Step 1 
    • The Live Scan document RI-030 (page 2) from Step 2
    • A government-issued picture ID (i.e. Driver’s license or Passport)

IMPORTANT: You will be given a Transaction Control Number (TCN) at your fingerprint appointment. Write this number down, as you will need it for Step 4, and BookNook does not receive your TCN. If you need help finding this number, please contact IdentoGO at 888-467-2080, and a representative can provide you with your TCN, or you can look up your TCN here: https://uenroll.identogo.com/status-check.

Step 4: Provide BookNook with your Transaction Control Number (TCN) and submit your receipts for reimbursement (if applicable)

  • You must provide BookNook with your TCN. This allows us to share it with DPSCD for faster access to your background check report.  
  • If you did not get a TCN at your appointment, you can find your TCN at this link: https://uenroll.identogo.com/status-check.
  • In addition, regardless of where you live, BookNook will automatically pay you $18 for the time you spent completing this background check process once we receive your TCN.
  • Reimbursements and payment will be made within 2 pay dates from the time we receive your TCN and your reimbursement request (if applicable).

That’s all you need to do. Thanks for completing the process!

We will notify you via email once we have received your clearance from DPSCD. Additionally, your Tutor Portal background check page will be updated.  If there are any issues with your fingerprints, IdentoGO may contact you directly.

 


Option 2: Hard Copy Fingerprint Process

(Backup option, available to all tutors in the US)

Step 1: Complete the online IdentoGO registration process

    • Go to the IdentoGO Michigan Website
    • Click on the green box that says: “Register For Non-Resident Cardscan Process”. 
    • On the next screen, select “Yes” to confirm that you are eligible to submit hard copy fingerprints.
    • Enter the agency/requester ID code “1119A“ and click “Go”.
    • Select “Michigan School Employment / NCPA” as the “fingerprint reason” from the dropdown menu on the next page.
    • Fill out ALL of the requested personal information on the application page. It is important that you type your name EXACTLY how it appears on your government-issued ID. 
    • Verify all information is correct on the Information Verification page and click “Go”.
    • On the payment page, select the method of payment you will use when you attend your appointment (credit card or check/money order). BookNook will reimburse you for the cost of the fingerprinting. Reimbursement instructions can be found in step 5 below. 
    • On the Registration Complete page click “Save as PDF” to save a copy of your IdentoGO Barcdoe Document to your computer (for future reference). You can then print out the document from the PDF.
    • Once your IdentoGO Barcode Document is printed, please write two contact methods (phone number and email) on the barcode document. You will send this document with your completed fingerprint card to be mailed to IdentoGo.

    Step 2: Schedule and attend an appointment to get your fingerprints onto an FD-258 Fingerprint Card

    • Find a reputable fingerprinting business (local law enforcement office, Printscan, Certifix, etc.) near you to complete your fingerprints (you can also Google “fingerprinting companies near me”). Please be sure that they can provide you with an FD-258 card (Appendix A) and print your fingerprints on that card. 
    • Bring the following documents with you to your appointment: 
      • A government-issued picture ID (i.e. Driver’s License or Passport)
      • The IdentoGO Barcode Document you printed in Step 1.

      Please note: BookNook will reimburse you for the fingerprinting fees (see Step 5).

    Step 3: Mail your completed FD-258 Fingerprint Card and your IdentoGO Barcode Document to IdentoGO for processing

    • Make sure your Fingerprint Card is filled out completely. Details on how to complete your Fingerprint Card can be found in Appendix A.
    • Place your completed Fingerprint Card AND your IdentoGO Barcode Document (from Step 1) in an envelope and mail them to the address below:

    • IMPORTANT NOTES: 
      • DO NOT FOLD the fingerprint card.  
      • The names on both items must match exactly, or they will be rejected. 

    Step 4: Complete the MI authorization documents via DocuSign

    • Complete the documents by clicking here. Please complete all requested information in the required fields. Upon completion, we will automatically receive a copy of the documents. This step can be completed anytime after receiving these instructions but it must be completed for your clearance to be fully processed.

    Step 5: Submit your receipts for reimbursement and confirm the date you mailed your Fingerprint Card to IdentoGO


    • You are eligible to receive reimbursement for the fingerprinting service fee that you incurred at the local law enforcement agency or reputable fingerprinting business.
    • Finally, BookNook will automatically pay you $18 for the time you spent completing this background check process.
    • To receive your reimbursement, and to be paid for your time, please complete the form below, upload all relevant receipts, and provide the date you mailed your Fingerprint Card to IdentoGO.
    • Reimbursements and payment will be made within 2 pay dates from the time we receive your reimbursement request

    Step 6: Provide BookNook with your Transaction Control Number (TCN)

    • After IdentoGO receives your prints (which can take up to 2 weeks, depending on the mail and processing times), your submission will be given a Transaction Control Number (TCN). You must provide BookNook with your TCN so we can reference your background check and confirm your status with DPSCD. 
    • You can find your TCN at this link: https://uenroll.identogo.com/status-check. If it has been more than 2 weeks since you mailed your Fingerprint Card, and you do not have a TCN, please contact IdentoGO at 888-467-2080, and a representative can provide you with an update.

    Additional District Clearances 

    Some of the Michigan school districts we work with require tutors to complete a few documents so they can obtain information related to your background check from the Michigan State Police. 

    As we identify new programs that require additional paperwork, we will reach out to tutors who have obtained their initial Michigan clearance. 


    Appendix A: FD-258 Fingerprint Card Instructions

    Complete all numbered sections:

    • Print your last name, first name, and middle name (Your name must match EXACTLY how it appears on your government-issued ID.)

    • The ORI for section 3 is  0001119A

    • BookNook’s address for section 9 is 548 Market St, San Francisco, CA, 94104-5401


     


    Frequently Asked Questions

    IdentoGO has contacted me about an issue with my prints. Do I need to respond?

    Yes. If there are any issues with your prints or if they are unable to be processed, IdentoGO will contact you directly; they do not contact BookNook. You need to respond and work with IdentoGO to address the issue, or your background check will not be completed.

     

    I have questions about my background check or the clearance decision. Can I discuss them with someone from BookNook?

    Clearance decisions are made by our district partners based on state laws. BookNook does not review or receive your full background check and is unable to discuss any of these details with you.

     

    It has been several weeks since I completed the background check process. Why haven’t I been cleared to sign up for tutoring opportunities with this district?

    Once we receive notification that your background check is cleared for the State of Michigan through our district partner, we will send you an email to alert you of your clearance and update the Background Checks tab of the Profile section on your Tutor Portal. BookNook processing can take an additional week. Please be patient as we process these clearances and update your status in our systems.
